2001 - 2006 Sprinter Rear Door Tire Carrier

I have an '04 Leisure Travel Van Sprinter conversion on which the original spare tire swing arm failed due to rust. Thankfully it didn't happen on the expressway. The gizmo arrived in an ill fitting box; part of it protruded from the cardboard, but it was undamaged. There are no installation instructions, but I referred to this page on a Sprinter forum which was exceedingly helpful: sprinter-source dot com/forum/showthread.php?t=43736 Installation was straight forward, but the non-hinge bolt was challenging to secure due to the tight fit for chubby hands inside the Sprinter door. I have since put on about 1700 miles of rural Appalachian roads and Great Slab Interstates, and the carrier is holding fast. All in all a good product.

Great product... My Leisure Travel Sprinter van (RV) came with a spare tire carrier that was attached to the tow bar and needed to be lowered to open the left hand rear door. A real pain... Problem solved with this product. Instructions are worthless but very easy to figure out how to mount. I had thought of mounting the spare tire under the van as it originally mounted but the cost of parts and time needed made that idea very costly.

Fitted it on our '05 LTV Free Spirit Sprinter to replace the real pain of the hitch mounted swing-down wheel. Need to open both doors often. Worked like a charm - hardware missing from package but they sent more - but I replaced it with Stainless. Useless instructions, but pretty much common sense. Nice unit - really pleased with the result.

First, my hardware was not in the box nor taped to the unit, so I was on hold a week while I had the factory send another hardware package. Second, there are no instructions, at all, but you can figure it out... pretty much... unless you try to use the hardware in the hardware package. Third, the hardware does not match the unit, the bolts are WAY too long if you use the large bolts. If you use the small bolts they are way undersized for the holes. You'll make a trip to Lowes to get the right hardware. There are modifications you can make (replace that stupid thick headed screw (one of three screws on each hinge) with a flatter headed screw so you can use a larger bolt for attaching the carrier) to make a cleaner installation. Finally, the angle of the brackets that go on the hinges is all wrong. you can't press the carrier up to the door to drill the third mounting hole. You have to put shims under the hinge brackets to get it to set flat against the door. All in all the quality was very poor.

product was as described, relatively easy to install, holds tire securely, and got it out of the passenger compartment, door works fine.
