It is important to know the roof height and wheelbase of your Ford Transit van before ordering accessories like roof racks, ladders, awnings, or cargo mats. They look similar at a glance, but a part made for a specific wheelbase or roof height won't fit another. The Transit comes in multiple roof height and wheelbase combinations. This guide will help you figure out which one you have in just a couple of minutes.

The short answer

The Ford Transit cargo van comes in 3 roof heights (low, medium, and high) and 3 body lengths: Regular (130" wheelbase), Long (148" wheelbase), and Long Extended, or EL (also a 148" wheelbase, with about 28" more body behind the rear wheels). Not every roof comes with every length, so there are 6 factory combinations. They're all in the Transit dimensions chart below.

2 ways to tell which Transit you have

  1. Check your paperwork. The window sticker, build sheet, or bill of sale usually spells it out, like "148 WB Medium Roof" or "Long EL High Roof." If you don't have them, a Ford dealer can usually look up the build details from your VIN.
  2. Measure it. This is the surest way. See how to measure your Transit below.

Ford Transit roof heights

Measure the height from the ground to the highest point of the roof, with the van unloaded and nothing on the roof.

Ford Transit roof height guide. Low roof: 82.2 inches exterior height, about 82 to 83 inches, with about 57 inches of interior standing room, on the 130 or 148 inch wheelbase. Medium roof: 101.3 inches, about 99 to 101 inches, with about 72 inches inside, on the 130 or 148 inch wheelbase. High roof: 110.4 inches, about 110 inches, with about 81.5 inches inside, on the 148 inch or 148 inch EL.
Low, medium, and high roof Ford Transit cargo vans, measured from the ground to the top of the roof.
  • Low roof: about 82–83" tall, with 56.9" of interior height. You can't stand up inside. It comes on the 130" and 148" wheelbases.
  • Medium roof: about 99–101" tall, with 72" (6 feet) of interior height. It comes on the 130" and 148" wheelbases.
  • High roof: about 110" tall, with 81.5" of interior height. It comes on the 148" wheelbase and the 148" EL.

Ford Transit wheelbases and body lengths

The wheelbase is the distance from the center of the front wheel to the center of the rear wheel. The Transit has only two wheelbases, 130" and 148", but three body lengths. That's because the Long and the Long EL share the same 148" wheelbase. The EL is simply about 28" longer behind the rear wheels. This is the most common mix-up we see, so it's worth double-checking.

Ford Transit wheelbase guide. 130 inch wheelbase: 219.9 inches overall length. 148 inch wheelbase: 235.5 inches overall length. 148 inch extended length, or EL: the same 148 inch wheelbase with an extra 28 inches behind the rear wheels, 263.9 inches overall length.
The Long and Long EL share the same 148" wheelbase. The EL adds about 28" behind the rear wheels.

Ford Transit dimensions chart (cargo van)

Figures are Ford's published 2026 cargo van specs, in inches, unloaded. Earlier model years and all-wheel-drive vans can differ by an inch or two, so use this chart to identify your van, not to measure clearance.

What can change these numbers

  • Model year: 2015–2019 and 2020–2026 Transits share the same basic body, but published heights shifted slightly after the 2020 update.
  • All-wheel drive: AWD vans can sit a little higher than rear-wheel-drive vans.
  • Tires, suspension, and load: lift kits, bigger tires, and a heavy build all change the real height.
  • Other Transit models: this guide covers the full-size Transit cargo van. The Transit Connect is a much smaller, completely different van. Passenger vans, cutaways, chassis cabs, and the E-Transit may differ, so contact us before ordering for those.

How to measure your Transit

  1. Wheelbase: measure from the center of the front wheel hub to the center of the rear wheel hub on the same side. About 130" means Regular. About 148" means Long or Long EL.
  2. Long or EL? If you have a 148" wheelbase, measure the full length from bumper to bumper. About 235–238" is a Long. About 264" is an EL.
  3. Roof height: park on level ground and measure from the ground to the highest point of the roof. Don't count a roof rack, vent fan, or antenna.

Why your Transit size matters when ordering

Many Transit accessories are made for one specific roof height, length, or both. Here's what to check:

Ford Transit size FAQ

Is the Transit EL a longer wheelbase?

Not exactly. The Long and Long EL both have a 148" wheelbase. The EL adds about 28" of body behind the rear wheels, for an overall length of 263.9".

Does the Ford Transit come in a 130" high roof?

Not as a factory cargo van. The high roof comes on the 148" and 148" EL. The 130" wheelbase comes in low and medium roof.

Will a low roof Transit fit in my garage?

Maybe, but it's close. A low roof Transit is about 82–83" tall, and a standard 7-foot garage door opening is 84". That leaves only an inch or two, and none at all once anything is mounted on the roof. Measure your door opening before you try.

Can I stand up in a medium roof Transit?

The medium roof has 72" (6 feet) of interior height before any flooring or ceiling panels. Many people can stand, but taller folks usually choose the high roof, which has 81.5".

Are all 2015–2026 Transits the same size?

The body style is the same across these years, but published heights vary slightly by model year and drivetrain. Always confirm your roof height and length before ordering.
